It’s a mixed bag currently. FMTs should not be taken lightly. Even the ones for C Diff do not always work. That hasn’t stopped people from exploring on their own. The gut biome can also be changed with prebiotics and probiotics. Medical science is going to change radically.
A few years ago my appendix ruptured. I experienced abdominal pain for weeks before I sought treatment. When my wife finally insisted that I go to the hospital I had to have emergency surgery and was told afterward that I was very lucky to have survived. My appendix had been ruptured and leaking into my abdominal cavity for at least a couple of weeks.
They put me on very strong and serious antibiotics. This of course reeked havoc on the bacteria in my digestive system. It took months for things to get back to normal even with the help of probiotics. My ability to properly absorb nutrients had taken a huge hit. It probably would have been a good idea for me to have ingested healthy fecal material or had it planted in my intestines.
