My mom is DNR and at a good facility IMO, but I agree it is also important for family to show up at unpredictable times, just to see if the care is consistent if there is any question.
My mother would not be able to report any substandard care, so it’s a very vulnerable position to be in.

Did the family put the camera in the room?

** My fear is that I may someday have to put my mom in assisted living or a nursing home. **

My Mom was discharged from the hospital to a skilled nursing facility following pneumonia. I hired private “sitters” to be there as the care on some shifts, especially weekends was awful.

She is now back home, and has a two wonderful caregivers, one a live in. I do cover occasional weekends, and maybe 4-6 hours several days a week.

The cost is less than a Nursing Home, or Memory Care facility. My Mom is happy to be in her own home, and I am
no longer feeling overwhelmed.

Her caregivers are retired with tons of experience from the hospitals here. I am blessed to have them caring for my Mom.

Wow. Scary to think of what goes on unseen in facilities.

Yes the family did now the staff is complaining about “privacy rights”.

They had none as far as I’m concerned. That was his room and as long as the family was okay with it, I’m okay with it.

The staff just does not want to get caught in the future messing up again.

Oh and PS the family put that camera up because they were suspicious of those nurses.

It’s hard to take a loved one out of a place like that once you have put them in. Lot of paper work involved. Those places now had control of his social security money. Maybe now we can change that. Sad day in America when the only we he could get out is by way of body bag.

BTW, you might want to add being careful regarding ‘Do Not Resuscitate’ authorizations.

My MIL had a stoke while in one of those places and we were called and told she had ‘fallen and broken her shoulder’. We live in KS City, KS, and she was in Ransom, KS, about four hours away. We left as soon as we were notified, to be with her in Hayes, KS.

I noticed her face looked strange on seeing her and she couldn’t talk to us. The x-rays they were taking showed nothing wrong, so I asked if they had checked her for a stroke. We got nowhere regarding our inquiries as they sent her back to the home.

Back there they claimed that because she had signed a ‘Do Not Resuscitate’ authorization they did NOT have to do anything. She died less than a week later.

She was a copycat killer. Not the original Tylenol killer.

I’m glad you found good people to look after your mom.
I have an uncle who is fading fast. He was hospitalised last year with pneumonia. They sent him to an after care facility from the hospital and it was terrible. The day shift was meh and the night and weekend staff must have spent their time sleeping.
He was lucky to live through it.

I promised my mom I would do everything possible to keep her in her home if/when she gets down.
It’s what family does, or used to do.

I found out that strokes do not show up on xrays or even MRIs rifgt away because the damage shows uo over a period of time.

My mom MAY have had a stroke but there was no evidence of it....but the drug doses were too high and when we got them lowered she stopped falling down.
