Coolest of the Cool...1939
I went to the Stephane Grappelli David Grisman concert too. I believe it was at UCLAs Pauley Pavilion. A lifetime ago.
That is great! Are there any such groups playing today?
WOW! Waaaaay cool. Thanks.
Actually, I saw him at the Catlin Gabel School auditorium in Portland. A small venue, probably fewer than 1000 seats.
Django with an electric guitar was Les Paul, who drew his inspiration from Django.
Reminnds me a bit of Les Paul.
Reminds me a bit of Les Paul.
” Djangos left hand was deformed”
This is where this counts with me. I have a deformed left arm. While my hand is ok, my radius on the wrist is locked in and I can’t quite make the twist to the neck. I play with the neck almost vertical for some exercises, and I have to use the jazz thumb position the rest of the time. Hitting the 3 higher strings is possible but I have to wrap my hand around to get the lower 2.
Just complaints though. All sorts of people play guitar with all sorts of handicaps. I won’t ever be “The best” but that doesn’t mean I can’t play something.
after 15 years of piano, believe me I’m still not the best.
I love Gypsy Jazz. thanks for posting.
The good news is, in 20 years Django Reinhard will *still* seem humanly impossible to duplicate.
You: even breathing, sit up straight, metronome, one quarter note scale and one scale only for 5 unrelenting minutes, timed on a real clock. Visualize an engine and how the pistons arrive at their ignition points just at the right time(s). It will be painful to sustain that for 5 actual minutes. If you do, it will yield powerful rewards.
Note that Django has a couple of fingers that don’t work.
Django FREAKING Reinhardt.
I still shake my head when listening to this master play. One of a kind. Pure genius.
I highly recommend “Stephane Grappelli: A Life in the Jazz Century.” It used to be on Netflix; might still be. Highly entertaining.
