Wow. Those Brits —I mean Irish sure are picky about labels!

But she didn't say "Britain." She said "United Kingdom", which is a separate and distinct country from where she was, the Republic of Ireland. The UK is England, Scotland and Northern Ireland (Ulster).

it would be like a going to Canada and saying, "It's so nice to be here in the States."

Well, Ireland was in the UK until 1931; the Irish Free State had dominion status until then and commonwealth status until 1937; recognition of the English monarch in any state matters ended in 1948.

And the irony is that they were “united” with Britain again under the EU.

I once heard President Obama give an address in Honolulu in which he described being "here in Asia."
