Writers often used fake names. Female writers have often written under male pseudonyms, especially in areas of interest to males.

The funny thing is that arrogant and smarmy Sabermetric aficionados are reading teenage girls stuff.

Think there was a TV movie about a female reporter who posed as a man.
Harry Potter author J.K.Rowling used her initials, IIRC, rather than her first name because the target audience, boys, might not want to read books by someone named Jennifer.
