Study: More LGBTQ characters on TV series, fewer women

TV series are including more LGBTQ characters and adding gender-nonconforming ones, but there’s a need for richer, more complex stories about them, according to the media advocacy group GLAAD.

LGBTQ depictions increased in the current season across broadcast, cable and streaming platforms, the group’s annual Where We Are on TV study released Thursday found.

Shows contributing to the change include NBC’s reboot of “Will & Grace” and “The Deuce” on HBO. […]

Of the 901 characters set to appear regularly on prime-time network series in the 2017-18 season, 6.4 percent are identified as gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender or queer. […]

The study also looked at how women fare on TV and found it wanting.

While women make up an estimated 51 percent of the U.S. population, they’re 43 percent of the regularly appearing characters on broadcast TV — a 1 percent drop from last season, GLAAD said. …

Not a bit.

Although I’d use just one term, “sodomite”.

TV, especially in the sitcom genre, is a long, far cry from the 1980s, when it was actually entertaining. Now it’s nearly all saturated with unfunny one-liners, poorly talented actors and wayyyyy too much social commentary. Funny thing is.. I don’t miss it.

I’m not a “goody-two-shoes”, but the biggest issue America is facing is lack of morality and family values.

I’m surprised that only 6.4 % characters on tv are gay. There is at least one gay person per show, so that doesn’t compute.

Not a problem...There are two of us in this household (different sexes; the word "gender" is allowed in this house only when referring to words...)

The LGBTQQWERTYXYZ morons out themselves.

The latest (that I know of) is Supergirl; I don't go looking for the freaks.

I suppose the perversions continue; Supergirl is lesbian? I may never know. That show, among others, is not allowed in my presence or within earshot... and there are so many today. As close as I can tell, this trend began seriously about 6 or 7 years ago. I refuse to keep track of the names, but pervert freaks are hard to forget.

People who (wrongly) assume that television is a reflection of real life now believe that half of the White men in this country are married to Black women, and the other half to Black men.

What is wrong with you?
That's racist!

And you forgot to throw in... all depicted black men are highly paid and successful professional or political leaders

Or replaced by transgenders because they’re so much more special than women and better at it, too.
Just like in sports, women’s awards, etc.

How we do regret our divorce from TV, 15 years ago. We’ve missed so much culture.

There’s always MeTV.

No LGBTQ characters on Gilligan’s Island.
Or in Stalag 13.

Korean series, usually 16 1-hour episodes. You can watch them on viki.com or dramafever.com.

It’s a few bucks a month if you want to forego the ads.

If there were as many queers as the entertainment media would have us believe, the human race would not have survived long enough to domesticate wheat.

TV shows are definitely pushing the homo characters, more and more, each season. The only ‘series’ I watch is Blue Bloods. For the most part, they don’t push the leftist pap carap.

And, I would like to see a study done to confirm if TV commercials/ads are under some sort of FCC law to push more interracial couples, more blacks as affluent and smart vs the dumb white male/couples who made bad decisions.
