In August, 1959, we visited Disneyland in Anaheim, Calif. On the way home, my father complained about how much money we spent. For our family of five, the visit—including parking, admission, food and souvenirs—cost a whopping $30.00!
$250 in todays money. Pretty costly!
In 1959, $30 was 1% of of a new car purchase price.
Today, the comparable car is $30,000 and 1% would be $300. A family of five at Disneyland today is probably closer to $600, or 2% of the new family car. For doubling the price, you get 5X the crowds, too! It’s a bargain.
Around 1959, I remember Dad coming home from work and asking “Honey, did you get cash today?” Mom would always respond, “Yes Dear, I got a twenty.”
