Recognized as a viral disease by German medical labs in the 1960’s, after dozens of workers infected by primates in a lab setting, so not new. Prior open outbreak in Uganda in 2005. Similar to Ebola, just not quite as lethal. Known carrier of the virus is a fruit bat.
Two viral cousins, Reston ebolavirus and Lloviu cuevavirus do not tend to cause disease in humans. Reston, Virginia Primate Center had quite a scare with a possibly airborne hemorrhagic outbreak in the primate processing facility back in 1989. Texas Primate Center destroyed filo-virus infected monkeys imported from the Philippines in 1996.
IIRC same animal in the movie Contagion.
