Wanna bet that there’s no sextant aboard? The over-reliance on technology has neutered sound seamanship. And just what was the bridge watch doing instead of maintaining a vigilant watch?
These two situations did not require precise navigation (knowledge of exact location of the ship). This was a failure of basic seamanship. Had you had a 12 year-old girl who races sailing dinghies at the conn these accidents would not have happened. And this is no insult to women who sail, but rather to the utter lack of professionalism or professional care on the part of the officers of what used to be my Navy.
