In Helsinki, like many cities, there isnt enough housing to keep up with demand. Some people blame a lack of land to build new housing, but one design firm argues that there is enough landif you know where to look. The firms new building is designed to fit in a single parking spot.
The city is not designed because of humansits designed because of cars, says architect Marco Casagrande, principal at the Helsinki-based Casagrande Laboratory, which designed the new tiny house. All the streets in cityscapes are based on car dimensions. This I found a little bit strange. We have all this talk about the density of cars getting less and less in cities, and at the same time, we are talking about people moving into cities . . . but we dont have space to build. Nobody has been questioning car parking spaces. They are everywhere. So this talk about no land to build in cities is nonsense: Its everywhere, but its just for cars.(snip)
The first prototype doesnt have space for a kitchen or running water, based on the reasoning that someone living in the middle of an urban neighborhood could get food elsewhere and shower at a gym (it does have a composting toilet). It runs on its own solar panels, and the wood material is self-insulating and warm in winter, so it doesnt need to be hooked up to the grid. But the architects are now working on designs that can also be connected to water and work more like conventional housing.(snip)
The architects are already getting orders to produce the houses, which cost around $40,000 for three stories. Its like [the price of] your average car, he says.

Would love to have a tiny house.
We have a boat.....and are surrounded by liveaboards. About 400 square feet with a full galley and a bathroom. The trawler next door to me has 2 bathrooms! lol
I would love to live on a boat. I get up in the morning and sit in the cockpit and drink my coffee. Best backyard in the world. Of course I’d need a bigger boat for 2 people. Just couldn’t talk Hubby into it.
Yes, but will it fit into a parking space?
LOL!
I just recently built a 20X16 cabin that has a full kitchen, bathroom with shower, open bedroom, small dining area and small living area, all electric, cable smart tv with a covered 10X16 deck. I rent it out for $600 a month all utilities paid. utilities cost me about $75 a month. Thinking about building a few more, people love them.
There is a company on I-10 east of Luling, Tx. that has building these homes.
They have multiple designs and sell the plans. Texas Tiny Houses/Homes, Luling, Tx.
Fits in a shipping container if you want to move overseas.
for $40k you could also have a car that lets you shower at the gym and eat out all the time.
False premise. There is nothing undignified about living in a smaller space. In fact, I will actually gain more freedom by doing so - more freedom from the tax man! Why are you so hostile towards people who want to live more simply?
As I get older, I'll be looking to convert my overly large spread into a much smaller home that I own outright. After all, when I die, I'm not taking my home with me.
No heat (not buying the self insulating), no water, no sewer, no kitchen. What’s the point? Save that $40k and live in a cardboard box.
You couldn’t get a queen sized bed up those teeny stairs. In fact, none of the pictures shows a bedroom and the article never mentions a bedroom. IOW, there’s no room for a kitchen or a bedroom. The whole thing is a joke.
There's no mention of a first bedroom.
Pizza delivery every night causes obesity.
It’s cheaper to buy an RV or travel trailer.
There were trees to pee behind in those days. Today, they just pee on the streets.
Cool. Now if the government will just pay the mortgage, this will be my stay-free mini-pad.
the wood material is self-insulating and warm in winter
.
You’re missing the whole point of the “Tiny House.”
Its not about living more simply; its about having your space regulated by your betters.
.
People are insane. I’m beginning to think that there must be something in the water.
nice, how much is that?
