The NFL appears interested in social justice reform, but Chargers tackle Russell Okung isnt buying the talk from the league office.
Okung attended the recent meeting in New York with other NFL players, owners, union and league representatives, but the lack of action since then may prompt him and others to skip next weeks scheduled meeting.
"NFL officials appear unmotivated and don't share the same sense of urgency. Increasingly, the meetings appear unproductive at best and disingenuous at worst, Okung said (via ESPN.com). Furthermore, the ongoing disparagement of Colin Kaepernick is a factor needing remedy for the players and public to feel heard and for real progress to be made."
Kaepernick is expected to be invited to Tuesdays meeting in New York.
Reports before the first meeting Oct. 17 said players wanted a month dedicated to social justice. After the meeting, the NFL said it wouldnt mandate standing for the national anthem, pledged to support programs to effect social change on the issues and Commissioner Roger Goodell and Seahawks wide receiver Doug Baldwin signed a letter to Congressional leaders urging them to pass the Sentencing Reform and Corrections Act of 2017, which would reduce minimum sentences for nonviolent drug offenders.
But Okung expected more.
"I thought there were concrete plans to help," Okung said. "To my dismay, that wasn't true at all. It's only remained as just talking. There hasn't been any action.
"It's disappointing, because anytime the NFL says it cares about something, like breast cancer awareness, domestic violence, concussions, it comes out in force. So far we haven't seen that."
How much money has this yob given to improve the community?
How come the players have not gone out on strike yet? If they really cared, they would immediately strike!
Chuck the Fargers!
Perhaps some one in the NFL might suggest to Mr. Okung to "go his own way" if he feels that strongly about encouraging even more paying customers to become disinterested in the business that pays his salary?
Does anyone really care?
Russell Okung’s parents are Nigerian immigrants. Kind of amusing that such a person who is fresh of the banana boat (in my book) is bitching about slavery and racism here. Just show how plain dumbass this NFL situation is.
Hey, Russell, quit. Nobody is making you play. Just quit.
How do white people get their reputation back?
Is there still an “NFL” with a variety of “actors” and “thespians” parading around in costumes like they were/are important? I have been gone a few weeks and fail to have missed those who call themselves athletes.
I hope they keep on kneeling. It’s waking more and more people up.
Die, NFL. Die.
I have been to Africa several times as well and it’s way higher than 50% that would trade places. As one person told me I worked with ‘I want to live somewheres the poor people are fat”.
Yep. See what happens when you try to be “conciliatory” and “Understanding” to Alinsky-ites? It’s never enough. Ever.
‘Urgency’? What a dildo. Eight years of panacea under Obama I guess. All of a sudden its urgency. Sink in the abyss NFL!
Why? He believes his country is garbage. Why appease the diseased?
Are these people out of their freeking minds?? Talk about killing the goose with the golden eggs.
Not a hint of disloyalty at he World Series. That has my attention as I watch America’s sport, the Fall Classic.
NFL out of the USA!
How about each of these social justice crybabies start the proverbial ball rolling by donating a million dollars apiece? The average NFL player makes $1.9 million per year and there are nearly 1700 players.
IF they really cared, there is $1.7 BILLION on the table that could be contributed and still leave them plenty rich. But, they don’t care about that. Instead, this is all about taking down “the man” and smacking whitey in the mouth.
I sure can’t wait until they destroy the NFL. They disgust me.
Keep digging stupid! You’re alreay almost at the bottom of the hole..
I’ve had it with these damn kneegroes.
If they don’t want to put their efforts into playing football instead of their social “just us” crap, fire them and only hire white men to play in the NFL.
