A California surfer has won a recycled surfboard contest with an entry covered with 10,000 cigarette butts.
This is the most polluted item picked up on the beach, creator Taylor Lane told the Orange County Register. And no one thinks twice that you can do anything with it.
Lane, 24, from Santa Cruz had the top entry amid an assortment of boards made from potato sacks, used packaging and stuff picked up from Dumpster dives. An Australian entry was made from an old bathroom door.
The entries were for the third annual Creators & Innovators Upcycle Contest, hosted by the Vissla surfing gear brand and the nonprofit Surfrider Foundation.
A dozen entries were displayed last Friday at the Ecology Center in San Juan Capistrano.

Bet he smokes the competition at the next open.
I bet he falls on his butt.
They do float.
What a drag, the article doesn’t show the prize or the board.
He must be using some of my dad’s old filters. He always had at least two lit at any time.
About 18 months worth, for a typical smoker.
One can only imagine.

Disclaimer:
I know Lucky Strikes didn’t have a filter, at least
not in the old days.
Looks like its sitting on a coffin. What he might need when the board flies apart.

Surfers revenge?
Children probably would be harmed by such a surf board unless butts cannot fill air/things with nicotine. Trying to get people addicted to nicotine? Is that purpose? Or just trying to recycle.
If board get crushed by powerful ocean wave, water polluted with toxic chemical 'nicotine'. How can fish get fix for nicotine addiction?
What if people catch and eat fish? Good for them?
Call it the “Ash Tray.”
Surf em if you got em
I agree, in this day and age how hard is it to post a picture in a news article. Looks to me like he just decorated the board with butts , it doesn’ look like it is actually made out of butts.
Terrible reporting. What did he use to glue them together, how water-resistant will that be, and how “green” is that? Has to be some kind of plastic.
That’s refreshing. I was expecting the oft used...
