I think having a unique name helps you stand out from the crowd.

I may be the exception to the rule but I,the owner of one of the most common male names of the time when I was born,have always depended on my personality,intellect and character and hard work to "stand out".

Certainly you can stand out with a common name. Just look at Donald for instance.
