“That is the man I grew up with ...”

Those are the men I grew up with, too. My Dad, the mechanic; my Granddad, the carpenter; my uncle, a meat cutter, and I could go on. Grandpa was WW1, Dad was WW2, and I was Vietnam.

This was America in the 40s, 50s and half of the 60s. What the heck happened?

The first generation of Americans that didn't have to work-or-die came of age.

What the heck happened, indeed.

It’s odd, isn’t it? How, looking back from the distance of years gone by, decades past, the way we can SEE what happened. Slowly, gradually, we lost our way. We became this new place. A collection of clashing ideas and values, of virulent hatred.

It still interests me to watch, but my optimism has faded, my belief in our greatness wavers. Like many of us, with General Kelly, I mourn the loss of the sacred.
