I posed this question on another thread regarding a raffle of two AR-15 type weapons. My state requires a permit to purchase in order to buy a gun. Suppose I enter the raffle and win. I did not buy a gun, I won a gun. Can they jail me if I bring it home?
Just thought of another- if someone gives me a gun as a gift, I did not buy it. same question.
OOPS!
If the raffle is not in your state, you will have to pick up the guns from an FFL in your state, and at that time you will be required to comply with all state laws. So, no you won't be jailed, but you will need to applay for a purchase permit, FOID card, or whatever else your state requires.
If you read the fine print of these raffles, they will not give you the gun, they will give you the retail value of the gun in cash.

Without knowing what state you live in, it is impossible to answer this question. If face-to-face purchases without a permit to purchase are legal in your state, then you would be OK. If your state doesn't allow face-to-face purchases without a permit, it wouldn't matter if the gun was given to you or if the gun were purchased by you. The law addresses the transfer of the firearm, not the cash exchange.
