I very much doubt that typical inmates receive diets making up 5,000 to 6,000 calories per day. I would think that most prisons serve the minimum required calories per day. This would seem to be in the range of 2,500-3,000.
When my son was deployed in Iraq with the USMC, we were told that they were using 6,000-7,000 calories per day. I am guessing that the average inmate has no need for that many calories.
