The Goethe quote however is incomprehensible to me. What “eternal female”. And how would it “draw us upward”. Us who? And upwards to what?

But then, I am perhaps an irredeemable Philistine in some matters of higher art — still puzzling how anyone ever took Wagner’s “perfect fool” schtick seriously.

In Hebrew, Greek, and Latin the word for “wisdom” is feminine.

I think there’s an inkling in there.
