Well it’s almost a portable desktop computer in your hand that’s why. Haha!
The point I was making, is that Geek bench test does exactly that, dila813, they focus on processing data, while those Youtube shoot-outs focus on speed of retrieving apps from storage, filling screen memory, initializing apps, but never actually processing the task the app will be executing.
It is the processor that has to manipulate all of that, but everything else advances how well the processor can do its job.
A ten-thousand gallon per hour pump cannot pump ten-thousand gallons per hour if you feed it the fluid from a garden hose, and are trying to fill up forty thousand individual one quart jars.
You know, this is crap. I asked a simple question, and explained why i asked. I did not acuse, made no derogatory comments.
Thank you, sir, may i have another?
I am sorry if you are taking our repartee in a bad light, it was really not meant to disparage you, but rather to poke fun at those who actually know the truth but repeatedly raise the false question to snidely accuse Apple of using underage or "slave" workers.
I took your question seriously the way you intended, and I appreciated the way you asked it. . . so I gave you a serious answer with a full explanation of why it was so, so that you and other readers could understand.
Then, SamAdams76 made a humorous response which was addressed to you, so I also included you when I made a joking reply to his comments. I thought it was pretty funny.
That humorous answer was brought about by the fact that your original serious question is usually brought, in a much more derogatory manner, up as a slur against Apple, always by the same people who have asked it before, and has always been answered with the truth for the benefit of other readers like you who don't know the facts and want to know.
We joke about it because the question has become such a ridiculous canard over the years, so much so it has even been picked up and falsely repeated by the mainstream media despite the only evidence for it is the fact the reporters have heard it repeated by people without proof.
You have not been party to this on-going repetitive posting by the anti-Apple crowd who feel somehow duty bound to repeatedly post the false claims of underage workers making Apple products even, along with other anti-Apple myths, though they know though they know them to be lies. Another such myth is that workers on Apple assembly lines commit suicides in large numbers. . . when not a single worker on any Apple assembly line has ever committed suicide. Not one. Yet even in this thread one of the repeat offenders felt it necessary to post about suicide prevention nets at a plant being built in the US, implying that Apple workers will be committing suicide due to working conditions. Again.
What would be interesting is finding out how many apps fully support the new processor’s capabilities natively compiled in 64 bit.
There should be a listing somewhere.
The A Line of processors have been 64 bit since the iPhone 5s, released in September 2013.
Since December of 2014, all iOS apps submitted to the iOS App Store had to be developed with Apple's default Xcode, which made all of the apps both 32bit and 64bit. All app updates as of 2015 had to be compiled in 64bit.
As of the release of iOS 11, only 180,000 apps of the 2.2 million Apps in the App Store are still 32bit only. That's a little over 8%. One has to conclude, given the above requirements, that those have to be legacy apps that have not been updated since 2014.
As of the release of iOS 11 last month, all submitted apps have to be 64bit only.
As Swordmaker points out, these Apple threads often have people coming to them and making the same old long-disproved accusations of child labor, suicide nets, etc.
My response was meant to take those canards to yet higher levels of absurdity.
Android followed the MS Windows model, it’s a cheap knockoff of Apple thats good enough, people who like to dink around can modify it, most don’t even know how and just want it to work. If it weren’t for iOS there would be no Android as we know it, so the Android fanbois need to calm down about that.
That’s great, but they have to be compiled to support the processor, otherwise they won’t use the full power.
When you have a processor that jumps so far ahead in processing power, the characteristics of this processor have to be compiled into the application to use it’s full power.
I will see if I can find a list.
The Slashdot Crew is deconstructing this since Sept 14th, reading their comments.
It’s a classic open v closed architecture... Apple has a closed architecture, as such it controls the entire stack, and because of that it can optimize everything for that stack.
Android is open, which means it can run on almost anything, but can never be as optimized because it has to run on almost everything.
I don’t begrudge android, I write apps for both platforms, and android has come a long long way, but it is and always will e second fiddle to iOS in performance and experience there is no way it can ever compete.. the compromises for that openness cannot be overcome with horsepower they are inherent
Sounds like a bummer for the most part.
The real power is the ability to run with 4 threads and throttle up and down to 6 while most applications only do 1 thread.
Even then, the new processor is faster than most Android phones but it isn’t using the full power you are paying for.
A11 has 6 cores and most apps are living the cores idle.
I am still getting one though, I am sure the software will catch up.
After making a BS comment, do you really expect me to read a long winded reply from you?
Try reading it. . . I answered you seriously, both times I answered you directly, or didnt you want a serious answer.
I don’t find it so strange that the iPhone 8 would be faster than the X (of course, we still don’t have shipped iPhone X models in-hand) - but with all the extra load on the hardware - extra cameras, extra screen (with some unique screen geometry to deal with with the “horns” and all), assuming the exact same processor in the phones, it just seems logical the 8 would test out at least some faster.
What is surprising is that Apple didn’t tweak the clock on the iPhone X enough to prevent the difference.
Work gave me a choice so since I had a Galaxy s8 I got an Iphone7. So for two years I’ll miss out on whatever leaps Apple makes however...
While it’s hardwired doesn’t the Galaxy S8 already offer a plugin basically to have a keyboard and monitor?
No, dila813, Apple does not allow apps to hit the processor directly, so developers do not have to compile their apps to hit the metal. Instead, Apple provides APIs for every allowed function. . . and these APIs are completely compiled to use the full power of the processor. Apple provides a complete toolkit for developers which applies those APIs for that very reason, allowing the APIs to be available to the developers' fingertips. It makes app development easy for developers. There are hundreds of APIs for specific functions.
The faster you tweak the processor, the less time the battery will last. The other reason it will be slower is that the memory required to even display the screen is greater. That takes time.
Ok, so much I didn’t know about compiling my programs
