Well, it's not that complicated. You run a pattern...the QB times the throw to the point on the field your supposed to be...you catch the ball.

Armed with nothing but a slide rule, and a pencil, I learned how to calculate escape velocities (from any celestial object) in 1st year Engineering. I never would have wanted to be anywhere near where the ball was supposed to be, in an NFL game.
