In 1933 and 1946, the meteor showers were intense. The one in '33 was said to rain down meteors like snowflakes and one observer estimated at maximum, 100 in 5 seconds. http://adsabs.harvard.edu/full/1934PA.....42...44W

Last year was better than usual - it can be quite mild in some years.

Only the geminids and the perseids have ever been worthwhile for me.
