That was my first thought. This guy was supposedly an accountant, and a heavy gambler???? Somebody better check his books.
Only motive I could imagine is that he was paid a huge sum of money to carry this off. He was a gambler with huge debt? Maybe look for an untraceable offshore bank account accessible to the girlfriend.
