A new film about the fateful July 1969 car crash that killed Mary Jo Kopechne and ended Ted Kennedys presidential aspirations has an official release date, and it looks like film executives have Oscars in mind.
Chappaquiddick, which stars Jason Clarke as Kennedy and Kate Mara as Kopechne, will open in select theaters on Dec. 8, according to the Hollywood Reporter, qualifying it for the 2017 slate of film awards.
The film debuted at the Toronto Film Festival earlier this month, before Entertainment Studios purchased it for $4 million. THR also reported that the studio has committed $16 million to prints and advertising (P&A), further fueling suspicions that Chappaquiddick is being primed as an awards season candidate.
Early reviews suggest that the film is largely unsympathetic to Kennedy, with one reviewer writing that Chappaquiddick turns a critical eye towards the Kennedy mystique, showing how the family closed ranks around one of their own at a moment that could and arguably should have cost him not only his career, but his freedom.

NO! “ I will not make it across that bridge when I come to it” !!!
Are you kidding me? Are you freakin’ kidding me? Leftist Hollywood is making a movie about THIS? I’ll believe it when I see it. What I would really love to see is a movie on the other crime family besides the Kennedys: The Clintons.
Should have come out in ‘70 or ‘71 showing teddy rotting in jail someplace for manslaughter. But.......we know how that story plays out.
It won't be!!!
A bridge too far from memory.
He left her to die in a car he crashed while driving drunk.
He did far worse things.
May he burn in hell.
The neckbrace sympathy play.
I would be tempted to go see it if the starring car was switched from a 1967 Oldsmobile Delmont 88 sedan to a 1958 Plymouth Fury (white over red) and the screenplay written by Steven King.
The only thing more depressing than Mary Jo getting killed was the morons in Massachusetts reelecting Teddy right after. How insane is that? The guy is involved in a homicide and they reelect him - and again and again and again and again all the way up to his death. It really makes me wonder how rampant voter fraud is in some of these states. Like Arizona. How in the name of God has John McCain been reelected over and over for 30 years? The guy is a far leftist, what Republicans are voting for him?
Wasn’t he supposed to drive marylinn home after Bobby had her or was it his brothers pt boat that rammed teddy’s car?
Yes! It is disgusting how he slid from justice. I always hated the Kennedys even as a kid. It’s been nice to see how tarnished their halo has been in recent years.
Maybe it will get a 4-glug rating.
“Teddy, what if I’m pregnant?”
“We’ll cross that bridge when we come to it.”

It was all her fault.
To be sure.
Yep. There is no way in hell they will tell the real story otherwise the left will ban it. How was he able to get out of the car and she wasn’t? And once he got out, why didn’t he go back the way he escaped and got her? It’s not like the car was under 50 feet of water. It was barely submerged. And if he couldn’t get her, why didn’t he run to one of the houses and have them call for rescue? One woman testified she was home all night with her front porch light on. This bastard only cared about himself. He could have easily rescued her in my opinion, he deliberately allowed her to die in his drunken state because he was going to blame it on someone else. That’s why he never asked the people around there to call for help.
And another abortion, too.
I remember when Teddy ran against Carter for the Dem nomination in 1980. Someone had a great cartoon of Teddy driving a convertible toward a bridge with Jimmy as a passenger in the front seat wearing a scuba suit.
