It's curious to me that lots of comments are focusing on the assumed "shortcomings" of these kids.

Are kids today immature or is it that the news warns us about kids today being in danger of X?

I don't know, probably some of both. I do know a woman who leaves pre-teen kids alone, unsupervised, for 10 days and leaves the country is not someone most people would consider a responsible parent.

That is probably right but we do not not have the right to tell some one else how to raise their children.
