Only 59 percent of German school children aged 14 or older know that Auschwitz-Birkenau was a Nazi death camp, a study released on Thursday shows.
The study by the Körber Institute found that less than half (47 percent) of 14 to 16 year olds had heard of the death camp where over one million people were murdered between 1941-1945.
Their peers aged 17 or over were more likely to have heard of Auschwitz, but three in ten still didn’t know what it was.
In the population as a whole, 86 percent of Germans know what the camp's purpose was.
“We are worried to see that ever fewer German states offer history as a separate subject during middle school,” said Sven Tetzlaff, head of educational research at the Körber Institute. “For me, this is one of the reasons why such a shockingly large number of school kids don’t know about the Auschwitz concentration camp.” …

I suspect that 99% of Japanese kids do not know what the “Rape of Nanking” was.
Bet they know about Dresden, though.

Ignorance of history is not exclusive in Germany, it’s here too. Sad to say I saw interviews with US college students, and one after another had no idea who won the Civil War.
Those who do not learn history are doomed to repeat it.

Suppressing actual history is a “good thing”? because that’s what this is. It’s not teaching history in the wrong context.
Thats not bad, 2 out of 3 High School Graduates in California can Not Read, Write, or do simple arithmetic above the 8th grade level
We have nothing to crow about in regards to history education.
Go to any YouTube video about the Holocaust and read the comments, it’s real eye-opening.
Over the last five years that my son (German) was in school...I would pour over the textbooks and workbooks. The math books were always better developed and made more sense than what I had in the American school system.
So I come to the history books used, and there was an enormous amount of time fixated on Roman history and the period between the 1500s and 1914. WW I would be a page or two. The 1920s and 1930s would get several pages. The holocaust period would be a page or two. Then the remainder (one-third of the history book) would cover from 1945 to present day.
So you come to two observations. There are a fair number of Germans who think the Nazi-guilt thing should come to a conclusion. The second observation is that there’s another group who think that history is told in a fair boring fashion and kids literally fall asleep as lessons are delivered.
I tend to avoid the Jihadtube part of Youtube. Reminds me too much that our present time is indeed the end time.
There was a German mini-series a few years ago called “Unsere Mütter, unsere Väter” about the lives of a group a Germans during the War and their experiences.
From watching it, you would have thought that it was the Poles that committed the Holocaust.
But this is not about us, here.
As far as that goes, things have taken a Soviet-like turn.

How many of those 4 out of 10 are Moslems who don’t even believe there was a Holocaust?

Oh yes, everybody knows how “evil” the US is now.
