Don’t be surprised - they won’t

The arrogant, disconnected attitudes of the NFL, and its players, have been many years in the making.

Being typical monopolists and crony-capitalists, Roger Goodell and the NFL owners want fly-over Americans to buy their products, but they have totally conformed to the attitudes of our leftist elites, who pay for their stadiums and live with them in the media.

The NFL's anti-American position is an astounding strategic mistake on so many different levels.

Promoting identity politics works for the democrats, because they benefit from immigration - both legal & illegal - that serves to deliver power & control based on that particular platform.

OTOH, the NFL suffers from those same exact policies. It has been noted for 20 years now that LA lacks interest in a professional football team because: (a) there are alternatives; and (b) the region is minority majority who have no interest in football. Rather, they follow and support soccer.

Besides which, the NFL was going to suffer declining audiences anyway. This was due not only to differing tastes of our "new" citizens, but also because of younger generation(s) who don't watch TV & don't participate in team sports. Rather, they spend their time on-line playing games, engaged in social media or pursuing active, individual activities. Last, but least, is CTE. In many regards, allowing children to engage in such a violent game with potential long-term mental/physical effects could be construed as child abuse.

Add this all up, and the smart course for the NFL would be to take the approach Trump is advocating & Jerry Jones is supporting. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised to see Jones launch a (secret) attempt geared towards either taking over or breaking away from the league with other supporting owners. If he fails in this effort, perhaps he may be able to resurrect a rump, partial league in which to stage a comeback.

As the OP stated, while it may be over for we fans, the shit show is only just starting for this huge entertainment goliath and its media allies. And they will lose bigly - if anyone doubts this, then they probably don't realize the groundswell of support Trump candidates will receive in Nov 2018.
