It’s not just the NFL and Sunday. Gather in any group, and soon there’s talk of the local HS teams and who’s kids and grandkids are stars. Fall Saturdays are monopolized with college football.

My extended family, none of whom were/are particular gifted athletes, ALWAYS gets around to LSU talk sooner or later whenever there’s a gathering.

The morning coffee groups I go to always spend part of the morning talking sports.

But ask ANY of them who the latest local National Merit Scholarship winner is, and you’ll get that look.

I don’t think this will be revolutionary to that extent. I think that, at least, and for a girl, watching excellence in action is inspirational like in a movie, an opera, a ballet or a game.
I know who the merit scholars were in my school where I taught and in my kids’ school. And that’s inspiring for people who are lucky enough to be involved with kids
The deification you talk about is too far
