Part of it comes from an interview I watched where he was totally obnoxious to the interviewer. Monosyllabic answers and a smarmy, condescending, bored attitude. And the interviewer had done nothing to deserve that.

Plus his relation with Dean Martin that soured because he got tired of being the clown, when that was the whole reason for his "success."
