Film director Darren Aronofsky has defended his much-maligned film, mother!, calling it a punk movie that was designed to elicit the strong reactions it has garnered from critics and audiences.
Speaking with radio host John Horn in a Q &A following a recent screening at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, Aronofsky seemed to side with the harshest of his critics when he admitted, How, if you walk out of this movie, are you not going to give it an F? Its a punch. Its a total punch. He was referring to the infamous F rating given mother! by CinemaScore, one of only 11 films in history to receive that low mark.

Who are the suckers who pay way too much to see garbage like this? Bet they voted for Hillary, too.
Not enough suckers since the movie crashed and burned at the box office.
If reaction is really what he wants, that’s easily solvable. Write a movie about Mohammed. You don’t even have to be creative in the story line. Just tell the truth, and then watch the “reaction.”
“I meant to do that!”
Yeah - sure you did.
I’m looking forward to hearing from actual punk rockers ripping this dolt a new one for trying to disguise this bomb as anything but lame by calling it “punk.” Quite a few of them have veered right in their later years.
He's making a cult film. I don't think he expected much box office success.
In a world where most films are as forgettable as the last can of Pepsi I drank, I won't fault Aronofsky for making something challenging.
And this has nothing to do with his star, Jennifer Lawrence, running her mouth about hurricanes being earth’s punishment for the US voting for Trump? With a little luck, this picture will end her career.
Well, maybe he’s correct.
While I love many of the bands, the fact is the Punk music scene was made up of a lot of (not all) really, really, I mean REALLY s@@@y musicians who were more about tantrum than music.
It didn’t elicit any reaction. It was seen for what it was; a movie designed to “offend” people the writer didn’t like. Those are a dime a dozen.
Unlike The Handsmaid’s Tale which was intended to attack a fabricated version of Christianity but instead, was interpreted to be going after Fundamentalist Islam which actually exhibits the very qualities in the show.
Yup!
You hear this every time some big budget incoherent mess of a movie is released. “It’s designed to provoke, to start conversations, to raise consciousness, blah, blah blah.” Really, it’s just a bad movie.
Excuses don’t pay the bills Jack......
Yep, because there’s nothing more edgy than a pathetic ‘story’ where an infant is sacrificed and eaten. Sick bassturd.
It’s Aranofsky. He became famous by putting a future Oscar woman in a film where she put a sex toy in her bum and another woman’s bum in order to pay for drug money.
He’s a remarkable filmmaker, but he ain’t exactly mainstream.
LOL. No, a turkey is a turkey, and no one gets or wants credit for a turkey.
We can make his dream come true. We can show our reaction to this tripe by staying away, thus making its very failure its success.
Or some such convolution of logic that lives in the looniverse.
