I go ballistic when a doc office asks for my social. Always refuse. But it's on my Medicare card. We're caught between the devil and the dark web.
I also protest when the 8-10 pages of info they ask you to fill out are all redundant. Too lazy to curate the docs. If I don't like the question I cross it out. Heck with them.
According to the gubmint, they are rolling out new Medicare cards on which the SSN is replaced with a newly assigned Medicare Beneficiary Identifier.
