I am trying to use Linux Mint,
but I also need support for a landline modem.

any suggestions on how to get Linux
working with a modem?

Here is a list of Linux Compatible sound cards.

Genuine Sound Blaster (non-win modem) cards were original the fool proof method. Some other cards work too. Hardware cards, not software cards.

Some distributions of Linux work with some soft cards too.
