Palin didn’t say anything like that, you are repeating the parody skit on Saturday Night Live.

What Palin talked about was how close the borders of Alaska and Russia are (only 18 miles across the Bering Straight). She said you can “see” Russia from Alaska, which is perfectly true when the conditions are right.

Seems I am wrong about the “18 miles” figure. At closest, a Russian island and a US island in the area are only 2 1/2 miles apart, so easily visible in reasonably clear conditions.

But the mainlands are apparently 37 miles apart, so I don’t know where I got the “18” from......

Still, the point stands, that it was only the SNL parody that introduced the “I can see Russia from my house.”
