It appears to me the winners are always from about 10 drivers. The other 30 or so just leisurely drive around the track.

Well, when you consider that Juan Pablo Montoya, Indycar and Indy 500 champion, etc only managed to ever win two NASCAR races, yeah, it’s a tough field, and a lot more difficult than people would expect. Concentrating and being able to compete on that level for multiple hours every week is very very tough.
For a lot of drivers, it is easier to give 90-95% and come home with a bag of money, and hopefully not wreck.
