We have all fallen prey to horrible headline writers and their gotcha games. They are paid to get clicks and readers, not to be informative or truthful.

But we as a society also seem to want to have lifetime punishments for anyone accused of that particular crime, no matter the details or the truth of the matter.

(I have a friend of a friend who did 4 years because his camera was taken by a buddy, without his knowledge or consent, used to record a sex act, the girl turned out to be underage, the buddy was not charged by the DA (the girl was not a helpful victim or witness), but the camera collected as evidence gave the owner a lifetime registry for child porn, plus 4 years of his life. We are far too eager to punish someone, anyone, whenever we see the words "child" and "sex" in the same sentence.)

Silly me. When I read “who sexually abused daughter”, I fell for it. I assumed he was (1) convicted of sexual abuse, and (2) the victim was his own daughter. The headline is exceptionally lurid as written, which is how I interpreted it, but as you say it is deceptive. I wish journalists would simply be honest.
