"The percentage of domain traffic, referred by Google Search, net of brand searches (PGSTN)"
It is a metric the researcher developed to measure the percentage of a site's traffic referred by Google, excluding explicit searches where the user typed the actual name of the site. We want to know, how often does Google refer a particular site when the user is not explicitly requesting that site. For instance, if a user types "Breitbart" then Google pretty much has to refer Breitbart.com or else their bias would be so obvious that they lose all credibility forever. But how often does Google list the myriad Breitbart articles/pages for numerous topics and keywords which do not explicitly name that site? If you are a random web user trying to look up topics and content covered by Breitbart (taken just as an example), will Google refer you to that site as easily as it will refer you to ThinkProgress or NPR? That is what this data analysis is looking at.
