Irma starts to lash Florida as governor warns ‘state has never seen anything like it’

The killer storm — responsible so far for 25 deaths across he Caribbean — is expected to pummel the Florida Keys early Sunday, then slam Fort Myers, Naples and Tampa with 130-mph winds and drenching rain.Coastal water could rise up to 15 feet — flooding homes and businesses, forecasters warned.

“In the FLORIDA KEYS, it is a full-scale hurricane emergency,” The Weather Channel’s Bryan Norcross posted to Facebook. “Key West is probably going to get its worst storm in modern history, and perhaps ever.”

And Miami isn’t in the clear either.

While the state’s largerst metro region is out of the predicted area for the eye of the hurricane, Irma is so huge that its 130 mph winds could stretch 100 miles wide.

The shift in the forecast, combined with a downgrading of the storm to a Category 3 hurricane, has National Hurricane Center spokesman and meteorologist Dennis Feltgen worried that people will misinterpret the level of danger.

The eye is currently right in the middle of the north edge of Cuba, about 150 miles due south of Miami.

I see - they have weather reports and satellite feeds from as “early” as the 16th & 17th centuries? No.

Oh, you little humans, seeing all things in your own little time perspective and anything your own time perspective has not witnessed as “not normal”.

Storm porn. We get it every time.
And I’ll discount it until my house blows away.

It’s very easy to find a website that lists hurricane-prone areas. I’m on one now. It gives the average frequency of storms. Those areas get hit more often than others. This is a natural phenomenon, and cannot be changed. Those who choose to live in those areas will get hit more often.

One of the most stupid things is rushing to rebuild after a hurricane or earthquake. Right on the spot where it has happened and will happen again. The first words you hear are “we will rebuild.”

Vernon Dalhart scored a hit with a song about the Miami Hurricane of 1926, which killed around a thousand people. Two years later, the Lake Okeechobee Hurricane killed more than 2,000 in Florida, the second-worst natural disaster in the nation's history in terms of lives lost. This was chronicled by another popular singer at the time, Carson Robison.

If .gov stopped subsidizing or offering flood insurance the “we will rebuild” talk would end quickly.

It is subsidizing stupidity—the politicians love it!

Thanks for the link. Most strong hurricanes have winds that drop off greatly in just a few miles from the eyewall.

I understood the hurricane strength winds of Irma extended out a long ways compared to a typical hurricane, but not how far they meant. The map shows that it is a hurricane for a width about as wide as the narrow part of FLA - so if it went up the middle and retained its current characteristics, it would still be 75mph sustained, with much higher winds through most of the middle.

“Only” a Category 3 makes it sound so much better than the Cat5 that it has been...but in an absolute sense, it’s still pretty darn strong.

Ahhhh, Port Charlotte!

When I was 16, me and the girl-next-door ran away together - on a Greyhound bus. We wound up in Port Charlotte, a retirement community, where her grandmother lived.

Within 24 hours, I was thrown in jail and she got to stay with her granny.

It was a wonderful vacation!

Postscript: the “girl-next-door” eventually became my wife but, alas, lost a battle to breast cancer at 28.

I note that for 1AM Sunday morning, the projections there show at 23.99N, the 100mph wind area is 48 Nautm wide. About 50 Naut by noon.

Irma is so huge that its 130 mph winds could stretch 100 miles wide.

The latest hit will have to be from Flo Rida, I suppose. “Irma Imma **** U Up!”
