Billy Magnussen, a white actor, has been cast to play a prince in Disneys upcoming Aladdin live action remake but many social media users criticized the move, accusing the studio giant of "whitewashing" the film's plot.
Magnussen, who played a prince in Disneys Into the Woods, was slated to play Prince Anders, who was not a character in the 1992 animated version. The Telegraph reported that Magnussens character would be Aladdins rival to winning over Princess Jasmines heart.
Social media critics slammed the casting decision Tuesday and accused Disney of whitewashing the plot of the film.
One social media user tweeted: Should #actor Billy Magnussen step down as Prince Anders the newly created white character in #Aladdin?
Why did they add a white prince to #Aladdin? This is going to be a disaster, another Twitter user wrote.
The film, which was set to be directed by Madonnas former husband, Guy Ritchie, does not have a release date yet.

Never cared much for that movie.
Don’t care much for normalizing Moslems anymore. (Never mind the spastic bizarro Robin Williams genie; a form we cannot shake since.)
In the cartoon Aladdin that also had Robin Williams in it, Aladdin steals from a vendor. A cartoon for kids showing that stealing is ok.
Don’t forget Montalban twice played a Sikh (Khan) in Star Trek.
The other day MeTV ran an old Hawaii Five-O episode where Ricardo Montalban played a Japanese character. They REALLY would have loved THAT one!
Reminds me of how they have refused to show old Charlie Chan movies on TV, because the actors were made up to appear Chinese.
Apply these standards to TV, and no TV show older than about 20 years would be allowed. Ditto old movies. In fact, a film festival which has shown “Gone With The Wind” in Memphis for many years, has now deleted that movie from their lineup.
