Bought a room air conditioner (on a stand) that we use only in the upstairs bedroom...because...the A/C we have does not cool much upstairs, but makes us freeze downstairs. I’m spoiled...got it set to 74 right now. It’s supposed to be 98 today here...unusually hot summer for us in Willamette Valley. And, I drink COLD drinks, ie water, root beer (Zevia) too. That does help. I have heard of people putting a wet towel over a fan, also...seems to cool the air, supposedly.

SF is a very strange place every day of the year but, yeah, when it’s hotter there than in Tempe in the summer, that’s weird.

I think you have a routine going for you; however, I would nix the microwave. . .bad news for health. Why not substitute a small toaster oven and a double burner hot plate. Also for a quick cup of coffee, tea. . .they have those things you place inside your cup for instant boiled water. . .however, directions must be followed and the heating element watched. I think they also have larger ones for soup that you just hold until it is hot.

That sounds awful, all the way around!

We lived in Ridgecrest for a while, high desert. Really hot summers and moderately chilly winters. Then went to Bakersfield for 10 years. Again hot summers, although not as bad, and pretty mild winters.

The absolute worst those Corpus Christi for a year and a half. That’s all we could stand it. Heat and humidity from May to October, nonstop. Even in the middle of the night.

So it could be worse for you! At least most of the nights cool down nicely for you, I am assuming. Being grateful for what it is, makes things more tolerable. Just an idea that I try now and then.

And you could always write another book to distract yourself. :-)

“Go to Costco and stand in the freezer room.”

LOL, there could be a line to get in

Sometimes I fill the tub with cool water and just get in and wallow around for a bit.

How do I cope? I sleep without any clothes and during the day, put some ice in a bucket and pretend I got a sprained ankle.

Seriously though, I try to get out on the water as often as possible in a boat....speaking of which, I’m looking for a new boat name. I was thinking of a FreeRepublic connection like “Freepers Rule!”. Suggestions?

Wrap a wet wrung-out tea towel around you neck (or micro-fiber towel). This cools the blood in your carotid arteries and keeps you pretty cool, especially if you have a fan or if there is breeze. Re-wet the towel and wring out ever hour or so.

You see landscape workers and construction workers who have to work out in the heat doing this. It really words well.

If it’s super duper hot, do the same with a t-shirt or a bed sheet and wrap your whole body in it. You’ll cool off real fast.

You can buy these at Amazon and probably sporting goods stores:

... but any lightweight towel (like a tea towel) words just as well. You can probably make your own from strips of old t-shirts or at a fabric store. Microfiber you don't have to re-wet as often. Linen works better than cotton too.

When I was growing up in the Middle East, I remember women would get a shift soaking wet, wring it out well, and then wear it. This is of course for when there is no air conditioning, maybe just a fan. I tried that as an adult in California, and ended up with a summer cold, so I stopped that strategy to beat the heat.

I find wearing my hair clipped up and piled away from my neck helps.

with that low of humidity, there are several things you can do:

1. make your AC more efficient: it will run cheaper, last longer and cool better by having something like the MistBox installed :

https://www.energyvanguard.com/blog/is-evaporative-cooling-really-the-answer-to-high-air-conditioning-costs

2. have someone run a garden hose up to roof line of your home and connect it to a polyethylene line with a bunch of plastic garden sprayers tips screwed into it that spray water onto the roof of your house: that will produce evaporative cooling of the roof, attic, and ultimately your home. Only run it during the hottest hours of the day.

Get a window fan and blow in cool air at night then in the morning close all blinds and curtains to keep out the hot air and solar rays.

I forgot about those. I also have a whole house fan and a patio lower house Door fan which I use routinely judiciously. My average PG4E bill is under $150, and the most I have ever paid was around $400 in the last 18 years. Not bad for a two-story 5 bedroom 2-1/2 bath 2200 sf structure.

Just the last few weeks have been a series of extreme extremes... 115F one day.

Just for the record, I do not embrace the man-made Global-warming crap. I am a retired Engineer and know better.

I am in West Texas, 100 degrees plus for the most part. House is well insulated so no problem there. Issue to me seems to be sitting around in hot weather doing nothing. I do have a travel trailer so I can go to mountains. Have acreage and another house outside of town where I put up an above ground pool ($500-600). Has been a lifesaver. Stay there more than my house. Read, dip, drink beer, think, plink with pistol, eat, drink, listen to music, dip, go to bed. No TV

I run an electric fan. I put it on me if real hot.

a 41-year old house, with the originally installed ac/heating unit capable of maintaining a 33-degree differential

I have a much newer unit seemingly capable of maintaining a 15 degree differential.

A quick rinse off shower will cool you down. Or, if you have hair, just soak it down. Wet down some washcloths and throw them in the fridge; draping one around your neck should chill you down. When it starts to warm, use it to wipe yourself off, rinse it out, and swap it for another one. If you have natural gas, get a gas grill and do most of your cooking outside in the summer. Finally, if your house is large enough, try shutting off the vents to some of the rooms and keep those doors closed. (Make sure the thermostat is in a cool area).

If you have electrical choice, shop for a cheaper provider in the area. But compare on your actual use, not their rigged numbers which may not be based on usual usage patterns.

...and keep the thermostat between 78-82 Is there a typo or two here?

Nope.
A few minutes outside (in 108-112) heat and 78-82 feels like freezing.

Mind you, these are recent extremes. Normally this time of year it stays in the 90s outside and inside in the 70s...

We’re in Mason County, about halfway between Shelton and Allyn. In other words, out in the sticks.
