As part of his comedy routine, Steve Martin used to get his audience all pumped up, yelling out bold, fine-sounding phrases and having the audience repeat everything he said. Then finally he’d yell out, “I will not repeat what other people say!” The audience would automatically start to repeat it, then their words would dwindle off as they realized what they were saying.
