I wasn’t on the inside, but I did go to a conservative school (ESU). The student newspaper’s editorials and columns were generally conservative, or at least neutral. But several times a week, there would be a HORRIFIC, HATE-FILLED, piece by a guest author.

And every time, without exception, that author was described as a student majoring in ‘journalism’ or ‘communications’.

I don’t know about ‘communications’ as a major, but I still have NO CLUE why a 4 year degree is needed for ‘journalism’. Seems to me that the job is finding news (and that’s usually spoon-fed) and writing stories. Any decent 2 year grad can handle that just fine.

Communication? As with journalism, it's closely connected to English departments. For one, some of the graduates try to get into broadcast news/propaganda.

You said it well, though. Well said and true.
