Maybe he wanted to prevent Dr. Palafox from going through a trial in the media. Or maybe he believed in innocent until proven guilty and people might think Dr. Palafox’s withdrawal was proof of guilt. Or maybe he didn’t want to reveal the investigation was going on (Dr. Palafox said he wasn’t aware of any investigation). Or maybe it was just Abercrombie incompetence.
Maybe the investigation was a ruse. Maybe Governor Choom realized they’d need a more maleable HD, and that Fuddy was ideal. So he needed an excuse, found one, and from his POV, it all worked out.
Here is an interesting time line. On Jan 19, 2011, Abercrombie tells his friend, Mike Evans, that no Obama BC exists. Here’s Evans recap:
“There is no Barack Obama birth certificate in Hawaii, absolutely no proof at all that Obama was born in Hawaii.” After Abercrombie made such a fuss about finding the birth certificate, Evans concluded of his friend that he has “got some egg in the face.”

At about the same time, here’s Abercrombie’s public statement:
“Our investigation is showing, it actually exists in the archives written down,” Democratic Gov. Neil Abercrombie told Honolulu’s Star-Advertiser.
A week passes. Then Palafox abruptly withdraws his nomination, and professes complete ignorance as to why. Governor Choom lied and said it was Palafox’ doing, but Palafox says he was told to withdraw and given no reason.
What happened during that week? Fist, Mike Evans was all over the place with his big story. He later claimed he’d misunderstood, but that explanation is as convincing as Obama claiming Ayers was just some guy in the neighborhood. Abercrombie had leveled with Evans; he’d simply expected his friend to keep his mouth shut.
What else happened was that after Evans told his story (iirc, 27 times), Governor Choom and his minions realized they’d need to act. Obama’s ‘vault copy’ BC would need to be produced. Also, they’d need a HD who wouldn’t balk at calling a newly fabricated BC the vault copy.
Exit Palafox; enter Fuddy.
I can’t prove this is what happened, and you can’t prove it wasn’t.
