I think he was trying to put as negative a spin as he could on how the Natives were treated. It is bad enough without adding to it with the “oppressed people” spin. History is what it is, judging it in today's attitudes and sensitivities is wrong and leads to malformed conclusions.

Ah yes, the native Americans as innocent peaceful people who never knew hate, had enemies or any thing sinful in their quiet and ‘loving everyone else’ pastoral lives.
