I don’t think the NY Slimes made anything up. McConnell and the GOP establishment are feeding them this stuff. It is what they do. They’ve hated Trump since Day 1 and would like nothing else to impeach him to send him and other outsiders a message.

Trump made a big mistake when he tried to make nice with the GOPe - installing Paul Ryan buddy Reince Priebus as chief of staff. Given how there are many fewer leaks since Priebus’ departure, many believe he was the source of many of the WH leaks.
Trump endorsed Ryan, McCain and others during rough primaries. Big mistake.
Hired McConnell’s wife for the cabinet.
How has all of that worked out for him? Legislation passed? Obamacare repealed? Ryan dumps on him on CNN of all places, and now this from McConnell.
It’s like that Shakespeare in the Park production of Julius Caesar only it’s real.

It’s not so much impeachment as McConnell wanting to seize the agenda from Trump. The reason all the GOPe Senators pounced on POTUS after Charlottesville wasn’t really about that. They were waiting to pound him at the first opportunity because there are big issues coming up. Tax reform, budget, obamacare repeal, etc.
The Senate is a lost cause, IMO. I think the only thing Trump can do is try to turn Ryan. He needs to work with Mercer and threaten Ryan with well funded primary opponents for GOPe in the house if he does not follow Trump’s lead. If Trump can isolate McConnell it will be a whole new ball game.
