BHT is used in many breakfast cereals to preserve taste and appearance and prevent them from turning rancid.

Well, that explains why that 1971 box of Captain Crunch I found in the back of the cupboard still tastes like the day it was made.

Was that the year Quaker introduced a new "easy open" box top? That might explain why it remained unopened. That was a disaster!
