Philadelphia's tax on sugary drinks has made soda more expensive than beer in the city.
The Tax Foundation released a new study on the excise tax last week, finding that the 1.5-cent per ounce tax has fallen short of revenue projections, cost jobs, and has forced some Philadelphians to drive outside the city to buy groceries.

Making beer more accessible for teens.
All as predicted.
But it was for the children...
I wonder if there will be a day pot is cheaper than cigs and soda.
Actually, it's "Making beer the economical choice for teens."
Gee, who saw that coming?
Philly is hopping forward, a head of other cities.
Hah! A month or two ago, the MA legislature doubled the tax on pot.
Boy, were the potheads incensed that the pols lied to them on what the tax will be, if legalized.
My oh my, a body politic known for its lies and corruption "misleading" people that intentionally consume IQ-lowering chemicals.
RATS rule. You expected another result?
Has Philly been taking lessons from Chicago?
Soda?
You mean, “Pop”.
:)
You think there’s a “War on Drugs” now, just wait until they’re legal and taxed.
Typical liberal legislation.
First, pick a target to demonize — here, the soda industry.
Second, pass a law with a lot of happy talk about keeping kids healthy and not letting Big Soda “prey” on kids.
Third, pass a law that’s purpose is to punish the evil target (the soda industry), even if it is completely inconsistent and creates strange consequences like this.
All this was predictable. When they said “raise revenue” what they really meant was “raise budget.” That it has undershot so badly is the reason they had to make a budget adjustment. Notice they didn’t say parks and libraries or benefits were in jeopardy, only pre-k.
Philly is east of the “Pop Line”, so it’s Soda.
“Soda?
You mean, Pop.

Nah, they mean “tonic”.
.
Not to worry, I’m sure Philly will get around to slapping a tax on beer too.
This is false. No one is forced to drive outside the city to buy groceries. It is more expensive to buy 'sugary drinks' in the city, and the residents may elect to drive outside the city to evade the tax. But the city administration knows what is best for them, not the stupid voters. So they should be happy to pay the higher prices.
Many places the Greyhound bus stops have soda prices higher than beer prices.
“pick a target to demonize here, the soda industry”
Soda is very bad for the teeth.
Colas, with phosphoric acid, are very bad.
