We All Need To Admit That America Has A Tattoo Problem

Not really. I view it as an excellent opportunity. Half a generation to a generation ago it was very difficult to judge a younger American's character at first glance. Now young Americans, and more, advertise their character on their bodies.

As a white collar hiring authority any applicant sporting tattoos or body piercings immediately informs me that he has no judgment. That's an automatic reject. There are plenty of applicants who have worked hard and made good personal decisions available for the second interview.

As a person, anyone sporting tattoos or body piercings automatically identifies themselves as being part of the lower social orders. If they want my trust, they have to overcome the evidence of my eyes.

This is especially true of women. It used to be that to tell the quality on an unknown woman, one looked at her hands. Those of the so called "gentle" class had soft delicate hands indicating they did no manual labor. Now relatively few American women labor to the point of having rough hands.

Women's tattoos and piercings are far more obvious. Those indicate lack of judgment, lack of self-discipline, and scream of "trash". Women displaying tattoos and piercings are not socially acceptable. Any young man with prospects rightfully does not consider them as marriage material.

People will scream and holler that it isn't so. They are wrong. But their protestations are of no consequence. They've locked themselves into a social strata. And those who must exercise judgment and discretion about character are grateful that many use their bodies to advertise their unsuitability.

we haven’t really seen a sizable enough percentage of old people with extensive ink to make firm judgments ...”

Hell, I have and it won’t be pretty. If you’ve ever seen what time does to a “super 8” tattoo of yesteryear, just wait until these “Ciniamascope” tatts start sagging and blurring.

I’ve always told people that if they get a tattoo, get it someplace that if you don’t want people to see it, they can’t see it. I’ve got my share of them, but when I put on shorts and a polo shirt, you wouldn’t see them. Just my 2 cents.

I made it through 8 years of the army, which include some of the drunkest helldog bar crawls of my life, and I have no tattoos.

Not sure how, but when I was 9, standing in a checkout line at Publix, I poked my mom and said “Hey, that lady has a tattoo” . My mother slapped the shit out of me, apologized to the lady and promised to explain on the way home.

It was a Holocaust survivor with her camp number tattooed on the inside of her arm. Tattoos are things other people do to you to mark you. No thanks.

I have a friend that invested in a dermatologist practice 10 years ago because they specialized in tattoo removal.

He is very wealthy and getting richer.

Chicks who get tattoos remind me of ooga-booga savages who put bones through their noses. And although, in our new, diversity-uber allies-culture, I might have to see you on the side of the road, at least I don’t have to date you, so...at least you’re someone else’s problem/burden/embarrassment on that front.

Here in PA most women I see have tattoos, usually drawing attention to unattractive sections of flesh. Every other day I’ll spot someone who looks like Queequeg and would be right at home in a traveling road show.
Me, I don’t even like to wear shirts with slogans or graphics on them.
Don’t care for needles either.

Back up your personal observations with facts. You cannot, therefore, they are mere opinions. Classist opinions, no less. The use of buzzwords like “trash” , “lower class”, “unsuitability” is a tell.

Hemingway’s article is engaging, to be sure, but I fear he doesn’t go far enough.

The fad for tattoos, piercings, and “body modification” in general reveals the sickness of our culture like a slap in the face.

For my part, at 59 and semi-retired, I have time on my hands — which, for good or ill, gives me plenty of opportunities to reflect on my life.

This leads to a certain amount of brooding about bad choices I’ve made — particularly some of my employers.

But here’s three things I always find a source of comfort:

1.) After a few hellacious hangovers, I got my drinking under control not long after I got out of college. Now I can make a six-pack last all month.

2.) It never occurred to me to smoke dope, although in the interest of full disclosure, back in college I had some pals who were into the stuff. While they passed the bong around, I would enjoy a pipe full of Carter Hall. I still do.

3.) I never, even for one moment, considered getting a tattoo!

I’m not trying to dismiss your post, but what do you say about men who served with tattoos of their units, like navy ships or special forces? You would hire vets?

I HATE tatoos!

I try not to even associate with anyone who has them on their body.

I think the poster made it clear. Those with tats are low class dregs, with no self discipline and are not worthy of his company. There were no exceptions.

I am not a fan of tattoos. But a lot of people on this thread need to relax. Remember: It was the baby boomers who made Botox and plastic surgery a thing. Is that worse than a tat?

IIRC, in the novel “In Harm’s Way”, there’s s the John Wayne character pointing out that tattoos don’t look good on officers.

I know quite a few people with pierced lips, noses, tongues.
When I talk to them it’s hard to get past what seems like evidence of mental illness. They look deliberately mutilated.
