He took over for George Cukor because Clark Gable felt he was more of a woman’s director. So Victor Flemming comes in, then he has a nervous breakdown and finally we have Sam Wood who finished the picture. Complicated.

I also throw Akira Kurosawa’s name into the discussion.

Agreed Howard Hawkes was a great director and so was John Ford, between them they made a lot of great westerns.

Here is one for you, Richard Brooks, he only made one western, but it was highly regarded and nominated for three Oscars. It was, “The Professionals” with Burt Lancaster, Lee Marvin, Jack Palance, Claudia Cardinale, and the Woody Strode. Watch that one. It is Fantastic!

Bergman doesn’t even belong in the top 10. Lauded only by folks who consider themselves intellectuals who want to impress other folks that consider themselves intellectual.

John Ford, Frank Capra, John Houston, Howard Hawks

Orson Welles, D.W. Griffith, Steven Spielberg...there! Now that's a complete(r) list!

Howard Hawks gets my vote, even though he never won an Academy (Ford has four I believe...). He could do Westerns - Red River - noir - The Big Sleep - screwball romantic comedy - His Girl Friday or Bringing Up Baby - or just straight action - Hatari. I would also add to the list Stanley Kubrick - Paths of Glory and Doctor Strangelove are two of my personal favorites. Love Billy Wilder too. He had a great run.

John Carpenter

A pretty good composer too.

Kubrick made few films (comparatively), but nearly all of them are great. Lolita, 2001, Dr Strangelove, Clockwork Orange, Paths of Glory, The Shining. Barry Lyndon, which I thought I wouldn’t like, may have been the best of the lot.

I agree, depending on the day, Open Range is either my favorite or my second favorite...Unforgiven is the competition! And for me, The Searchers is either second or third!

Now...I know Kevin Costner is a dweeb, but...he did play the character well in that.

And Robert Duvall is my favorite in nearly any western, followed by John Wayne.

I loved Lonesome Dove...have it here on vacation with me!

And don’t forget The Shining...Dr. Strangelove...Full Metal Jacket.

I love Kubrick’s, movies as well. I know he was a liberal weenie in a lot of ways (perhaps not all) but I do enjoy his work.

I have always thought that as well, though I did enjoy The Seventh Seal, if only for being a much-copied theme...:)

Has anyone mentioned Orson Wells? He did have some good ones.

He once said the best actor he ever knew was Ray Collins (Lt. Tragg on Perry Mason).

Collins was getting a bit feeble by the last few seasons but he always gave it his best. He died before the final season.
