Anything the BX has I can find cheaper out in town or on Amazon, with the exception of large furniture items. This is not really much of a benefit. The commissary is where I save a ton of money, and only because I’m in Alaska.

I do the vast majority of my food shopping at the commissary...it’s the best option for me as a single and Costco (I am on shared membership) cannot touch them.
Even with 5% surcharge. And with no sales tax, I keep my money away from CA and it supports the military.
Exchanges...I try to shop there for what I can for those last reasons. It has limits as far as non-sale prices...some good and many not, but they do price match Amazon (if it is a “sold by Amazon” item) and I have done that on several things, especially big ticket items, even though am a Prime member. No sales tax and portion goes to military.

The online only option is a good option for veterans to have...I wonder if they would offer price matching but could be a hassle. Also hope the verification process is smoothed out. I’ve had hits and misses with those even with more recent service. I have DD-214s on hand but local vet organizations are definitely a source of help for those that need to get them.

On another note, should AAFES (USA and USAF), NEX (USN) and MCX (USMC) merge in order to increase their buying power? Coast Guard too? That sounds noncompetitive in a way but do you want govt entities competing with each other? Commissaries merged a long time ago.
