It was a poorly written article, but the news is that sub-Saharan Africans, who did not interbreed with Neaderthals, were doing it with other "proto-humans", that is ape-men, about 140,000 years ago. That was not known.
People in the Java region also interbred with Homo Floresiensis
So, to some extent the major races on the earth today are flavored by which non Homo Sapiens that their ancestors interbred with.
Red hair is supposedly a genetic gift of the Neaderthals to modern man.
