Robots that mimic ivy vines can grow thousands of times their original lengths at speeds faster than the average person can run, a new study finds.
The new soft, flexible robots could one day be used in tight situations, such as to slither through rubble or snake inside the human body...
The newly developed robot is made of soft, flexible polyethylene, the most common plastic in the world. It grows from its tip via internal air pressure, which pushes plastic tubing stored at its base up through the core of its body. The robot is initially about 11 inches (28 cm) long, but can rapidly reach a maximum length of about 236 feet (72 meters), according to the researchers.
"The body doesn't move as the tip extends," Hawkes told Live Science. "That is, you could hold the body of the robot tightly in your hands, and the tip would keep growing."

Mild sinus headache, and very hungry.
A pile of squee, a flaming bookmark and here were are...
I didn’t even feel the Moving Van bounce over the last post... :oO
Hmpf.
Morning.
I need a shower. The night has left me hung over.
That could be from dehydration. I need to plan music for the next two weeks, so I can take the lyrics to Don Fabio at Mass this afternoon.
Sounds like a Lindsey Graham recreational activity!
You've got his attention already!
Yes, it could very well be from dehydration. Some nights I lose a lot more water than others. And I must have lost a lot last night because my right calf was cramping.
And just for the record, so far, the filter is doing what it’s made for, and I can breathe quite well, thanks!
Although, now, I need to go do that steroid thing to start my day. Then we will see if I need something else in an hour or so. Sometimes, the difficulty breathing is from fluid in my lungs, and the other two meds help to get rid of it.
Good news about the filter. Have some water, and salt!
*tagline*
Same.
Lots of water, and something salty like crackers. And maybe some cheese.
It’s very nice to breathe clean air again. I began to draft a letter to the manager and his pet beard, but after thinking about it, I’ve decided to just ask him a couple of questions: when is the smoking ban going into effect and is Patrick’s brother moving in or not? Then I’ve thought of another that is a little more on the aggressive side: Who do I bill for the $35 a month I’m paying for filters because of my cigarette-smoking neighbors?
I probably won’t add that, but I sure do want to! Especially if I end up buying three or four a month. These things are supposed to last three months. I get two weeks worth.
Did the BD Cod ever get to your place? I mailed it on Monday because sometimes, NC is like AR — stuff goes by mule train once it crosses the line into the state.
Just want until the code that produces adware gets inside and starts governing the behavior of robots.
Darks, where is the Moving Van? We can’t be officially moved until that shows up! I can’t even ping anybody until the move is official!
Yes, it did. It was beautiful, thank you! I opened all my birthday items last night, last think before I crashed and burned.
I’m glad it got to you. ;o]
Crashing and burning is not fun. But some days, that’s what I do. I hope you slept well.
I slept okay, for me. I’m still feeling a little jittery, but a couple of days in the air conditioning (at least most of the time) should set me right.
I need to put my glasses on. I thought the title of this thread was WINE inspired robots.
Nice sleepy floof this morning!
The kittens are litter-mates. Here is one with an older sibling:
How are things in Peoria? Or was it Ottumwa?
They are adorable!
Peoria is hot, but I’m getting used to it. The other day I heard myself say, “Only 104, not too bad.”
We’ve entered monsoon season. I haven’t been hit with a thunderstorm yet, although I’ve been chanting and lighting candles. Every storm has passed right by us except for the past two nights, when we weren’t home and the house got hit without us there. At some point I will actually be home when one hits. The first night I didn’t get rain but I did get wind and an amazing lightning show. I went out in the backyard around midnight and just watched it. The power of nature is amazing.
You’re just off the road from Wickenburg!
The monsoons take some getting used to, but I’ve lived in the desert (either NV or AZ) for so long that I dread the monsoons. Of course, it’s a lot hotter over Mesa way, and a lot wetter down in Tucson.
Do you get the moisture from the cotton fields and orange groves?
