A lawyer for the family of an Australian woman shot dead by police in Minneapolis says suggestions officers feared an ambush were "ludicrous".
Robert Bennett said Justine Damond was in her pyjamas when she approached them and "was not a threat to anyone".
Ms Damond was shot after approaching two officers in their car on Saturday after reporting a suspected rape.
Mr Bennett has acted in similar cases, including the high-profile police shooting of Philando Castile in 2016.
Fred Bruno, the lawyer for Matthew Harrity, whose partner killed Ms Damond, 40, had said: "It is reasonable to assume an officer in that situation would be concerned about a possible ambush."
But Mr Bennett told CBS News: "I think that's ludicrous. It's disinformation. It doesn't have any basis in fact."
He added: "She obviously wasn't armed, was not a threat to anyone, and nor could she have reasonably been perceived to be."
Officer Mohamed Noor, who shot Ms Damond in the abdomen in an upmarket neighbourhood of the city, has refused to be interviewed by investigators, as is his legal right.

His CAIR attorney is en route.

Those ambushes happen all the time.
Lawyer us a lib, clearly.
Well if you thought there was a gun, but there wasn’t a gun, then you committed murder.
Hook ‘em and book ‘em.
She was in her pajamas and ergo a sexual threat to the Muslim ergo she had to face Sharia justice
I was under the impression that if Internal Affairs wanted to talk to him, he would not have much recourse other than to resign and then open himself up to civil litigation.
Wealthy neighborhood, 40 yr olf blond lady in pajamas who called the cops walking up to the car.
Then Somali cop shoots her in the stomach from inside the car, across his partner, for no discernible reason. Very bad shoot.
If that was true he would have already shot a bunch of women.
Yup. He saw her in her PJs, and pretty soon he started to experience thoughts of a concupiscent nature.
As soon as that happened, he did what the Koran told him to do, and blew her to kingdom come.
Has he officially refused yet or is he still slow walking it? “I need my union rep. I need a lawyer. I’m distraught over the alleged shooting and I need a psychologist. Etc. Etc.”
Oh right. The cops suspected an ambush so they turned their body cameras off. Got it.
I saw last night he has refused to talk to whomever the investigators are.
Shot 3 times, not just “shot.”
Exactly. What that Muslim who raped the little German boy at the pool said, that it was a “sexual emergency” and so the German court let him off.
Minneapolis PD is the most unprofessional that I have dealt with. They make the Keystone Cops and Barney Fife look good.
THAT is a very bad sign. I was thinking he might have had a justifiable reason to shoot her due to a perceived threat. Refusal to explain to investigators means something else VERY wrong happened.
IIRC, the shooter was in the passenger seat and shot across the car through the open window on the driver’s side. Police cars not being all that large these days, that would suggest that the muzzle was right in front of the face of the driver. I wonder if his (or her) hearing has returned. Had to be a rude surprise.
Unless information has changed, I think he shot 3 times but she was hit once.
If it was an upmarket neighborhood then that makes it more likely the scene of the shooting was reasonably well lit. At least enough to recognize a woman in her pajamas. As I recall the initial call to the police was for a possible sexual assault so this could have easily been the victim rather than the caller, as far as the cops knew. They should have been on the lookout for a possible sexual assault victim. A woman running toward them in pajamas would certainly fit that description.
Minneapolis police officer Mohamed Noor and his lawyer have refused to explain why Noor shot Justine Damond, in a case that has reverberated around the world. But the Daily Mail claims to have interviewed Noors friends. Somewhat to my amazement, they allegedly say that Noor did it on purpose:
Killer policeman Mohamed Noor has said he was startled by his victim Justine Damond seconds before he opened fire.

DailyMail.com has spoken to those friends to reveal for the first time his account of what happened that night.
***
Justine was unarmed and had called 911 caller to alert police to what she believed may have been a rape taking place in the alley behind her home.
Speaking on the condition of anonymity, a friend of Noor told DailyMail.com that the officer had opened fire when an unidentified figure emerged from the dark and ran towards the vehicle.
The officer said he was not sure what the person was carrying and momentarily opened fire through his driver-partners open window. It was confirmed that Justines cell phone was found alongside her during the tragedy.
